A sad day and a rodent predicament (tragic mouse death)

Post by acidiclight »

TL;DR: broken mouse, need help shopping, can't see

The title may have overplayed the absolute severity of my situation, my mouse is still functioning. However, on this unfortunate day, a KDE Plasma developer and very sad Ritchie is experiencing the unfortunate slow demise of one of the best mice ever made. And it is stressing me out. They don't make this mouse anymore, I don't know what to replace it with, and.... please help. :(

Melodramatic writing aside, I have a Logitech G600 mouse that I bought back in 2020. It is really wonderful for me because I've been able to use it to control Magnifier on Windows (zooming in and out, etc.). When I switched to Linux, I never had to reconfigure those accessibility controls and they always just worked under Plasma. And then I discovered Piper, meaning I could even configure it. Awesome! Then this happened.

Code: Select all

 ❯❯❯ sudo nix run nixpkgs#libinput debug-events | grep POINTER_BUTTON
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +2.443s BTN_LEFT (272) pressed, seat count: 1
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +2.619s BTN_LEFT (272) released, seat count: 0
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +2.634s BTN_LEFT (272) pressed, seat count: 1
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +8.907s BTN_LEFT (272) released, seat count: 0
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +12.135s BTN_LEFT (272) pressed, seat count: 1
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +18.090s BTN_LEFT (272) released, seat count: 0
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +18.278s BTN_LEFT (272) pressed, seat count: 1
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +18.387s BTN_LEFT (272) released, seat count: 0
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +19.477s BTN_LEFT (272) pressed, seat count: 1
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +19.604s BTN_LEFT (272) released, seat count: 0
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +20.107s BTN_LEFT (272) pressed, seat count: 1
 event21 POINTER_BUTTON +21.399s BTN_LEFT (272) released, seat count: 0

I had that running in the background while I did a simple test 3 times. Left click, drag a selection, let go. I could see the selection visibly getting cancelled while my finger was still on the button, and issues like that have been happening to me for a really long time now that I think of it. It just seems to be more severe over the past few weeks. And... you can see it. There are way more than 3 press/release cycles, you can see the gaps in time where I'd actually let go of the button, but there are also cycles that happen within milliseconds of each other.

I need help finding a new mouse. Taking screenshots, and copying logs to have read by TTS, are a thing I do a lot. Nobody wants a dying left-click button. A few people suggested I try doing some solder work to replace the switch, but I'm blind and really hot melty sticks aren't exactly safe.

If anyone has any, I could really use suggestions. I don't need it to be wireless or to have RGB, but I do need it to work out-of-the-box on my system or require very little configuration beyond actually configuring the shortcut buttons. If I were still a kid, I'd be willing to experiment more with it, but the G600 is assistive tech for my blindness and I really just need my computer things to work so I can work.

I'm not used to forums, it's been a while, sorry if I'm rambling or too dramatic about a mouse breaking, but also thanks in advance and uhhh....hi? a...wild ritchie appeared?

if its only the left one glitching, could you swap the left and right buttons ?
