Re: What is the specs of your pc?
CPU: Intel Core i9-11900K
RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB
Primary GPU (host): AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT
Secondary GPU (guest): AMD RX 570
OS: Arch Linux
I main Linux and then pass a cheap secondary GPU through to virtual machines so I can run Windows and macOS at near-native performance side-by-side without having to dualboot or have multiple separate computers at my desk. If you saw any Windows or macOS footage in my videos this year, it was probably recorded in one of those VMs.
Also yes I know, all AMD. They actually suit my setup really well though, I use AMD on the host mainly because NVIDIA drivers on Linux are a meme and a lot of my problems simply vanished after switching. Also I don't really use any NVIDIA technologies (CUDA, OptiX, et al.) so I've never felt a lack of features (NVENC might be nice for streaming since AMD's encoder sucks, but that being said, x264 produces higher quality results than both of those for the same bit rate, and because I don't play any modern games on stream I don't mind sparing the CPU cycles).
AMD on the guest because I want to run macOS - that's it. I actually do think AMD on Windows seems a little mediocre, and I'm aware OpenGL support in particular has been a problem area (on Linux it seems perfectly fine). If I didn't want to run macOS, I'd probably passthrough an NVIDIA card to the VMs instead, but maybe that just means I should have a triple GPU system

I also run a approach that is close to yours.MattKC wrote: ↑Sat Dec 17, 2022 6:31 pm I main Linux and then pass a cheap secondary GPU through to virtual machines so I can run Windows and macOS at near-native performance side-by-side without having to dualboot or have multiple separate computers at my desk. I main Linux and run 2 gpus.
One for the host and the other for macos and windows.
At somepoint I will get a used 580 for the guest but whatever.
I run a 12600k
32gb 3200mhz ddr4
GPU 1: 6700xt for host.
GPU 2: GT 710
Boot Storage: 2x860 evos in raid 0 becuase who needs to keep data anyway.
(There is nothing important on the raid array. just the os and the windows and macos vms and some games.)
Storage: Nas and a 2 and 3tb.
PSU a 550w coolermaster bronze one.
OS Host: Arch Linux
OS Guest 1: Windows 10
OS Guest 2: Mac OS
Bluray drive 1: Some LG one with a libredrive firmware for 4k blurays.
Bluray drive 2: same as above.
Case: Be Quiet Purebase 600 TG.
PCIE Cards: I have a 7 port usb 3 card with 2 controllers on it that doesnt support macos. What I do is a plug anything I want to always be attached to linux to be on one controller. and anything i only want to connect to windows on the other. Then i passthrogh the motherboard one to macos for the keyboard and mouse. and audio.
Then for windows i use looking glass to controll the machine. along with scream or what ever its called for the audio.
I'm really bad at english, im also clinically tired.
Re: What is the specs of your pc?
Wow yeah very similar setup. I assume the GT 710 is only supported up to High Sierra? Or is that one of the rare NVIDIA cards with native support rather than requiring the NVIDIA Web Driver?Shaddow798 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 10:02 am I also run a approach that is close to yours.

The new R6 beta of Looking Glass has built in support for Spice audio so you don't even need Scream. I've been playing around with it and it's got some nice refinements.Shaddow798 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 10:02 am Then for windows i use looking glass to controll the machine. along with scream or what ever its called for the audio.
Re: What is the specs of your pc?
Yeah the GT710 is Kepler so has support up to Big Sur, dropped in Monterey
Re: What is the specs of your pc?
Ahh interesting, good to know. I was gonna say it's a shame they dropped it, but in a few years everything will be dropped so I suppose it's inevitable lol

The gt710 was supported up to Big Sur but can be hacked to work on montery and I think ventura.MattKC wrote: ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 4:50 pmWow yeah very similar setup. Huh yeah I supposed it does, I was wondering why audio worked on the vm on my laptop I setup with GVT-g had working audio, I think I assumed it had something to do with the intel uhd audio deviice or something. When I get time I will update my windows vms I guess.MattKC wrote: ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 4:50 pmThe new R6 beta of Looking Glass has built in support for Spice audio so you don't even need Scream. Re: What is the specs of your pc?
Why exactly did you get a 11900k when the 10900k or the 10850k is faster and has 2 more cores?
wouldnt you want the extra 2 cores for running the host and then you could use the 8 remaining cores from vms?
or did you want pcie gen 4?

Re: What is the specs of your pc?
Semi jealous at others setups here, mines kinda crap in comparison to the majority, but it gets whatever work I need done, so it's not too bad.
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600X
RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 480
OS: Windows 10
Been using my current PC for about 7-almost 8 years, started out with just an AMD A8-6600k with an iGPU on 8GB of RAM and a year later just slapped the RX 480 in there and sat with that for a few years till I needed a new CPU for music production, ended up upgrading the RAM, Mobo in late 2019/early 2020. Sadly my RAM ended up coming faulty in a way; it works perfectly fine unless you're starting up the computer for the first time in a few hours, have theorised what it could be but haven't come to a conclusion and the company we bought it from refused to take it back for some reason, but eh my PC still works despite this so it doesn't really matter too much.

Re: What is the specs of your pc?
I needed a bit more oomph for compilation and stuff, I kinda went overboard, but that's basically my first desktop PC upgrade in 11 years
CPU: Ryzen 9 7950X
RAM: 2x32GB 5600MHz
Storage: 2x2TB SSD
OS: Fedora + Win 11
GPU: none, hopefully something from RX 7000 series in the future
For everyday use this machine is way overpowered (except in games), but when it comes to compilation times it's stupid fast
