Lego Island and xstreme stunts

Post by legonut64 »

Hi Long time follower of Matt KC's and others work on lego island and software preservation in general. Posting here to say thanks for all the work in decoupling and preserving lego island. I also have enjoyed the sequel xstreme stunts over the years except until recently when i run in what appears to be a bug for the pc version and windows 11. Having successful created a workaround for win 10 I was hoping the jump to win 11 would be an easy fix. sadly i have tried my best with wrappers and tweaks but i can't seem to solve it without out digging deeper but I do'nt have the experience needed At this point I am not asking for a fix but just to raise awareness of the problem and if anyone wants to know more please let me know many thanks

Can you elaborate on the bug? Does it fail to load entirely? Or is it just graphical glitches?

good to meet you virtually thanks for getting back I didn't want to get in to much detail straight away in case no one was interested! The good news is the bug is repeatable If seems to occur right before a cut scene when a video clip is supposed to play crasuing a full crash to the desktop. what makes it annoying from a preservation standpoint is the game only saves progress after this has been played so if you don't have save files you can't progress. i have gathered a proc mon log and event viewer log ( i can share if you like ) which initially pointed to a direct show codec but after removing the videos altogether the crash was still there a 000x5 exception after consulting ai it thinks the bug is in the cut scene initialization. I have gone as far as i can go without help. Shame because the game worked on win 10 with out too much trouble aside from the workaround i found and posted here. https://rockraidersunited.com/topic/875 ... 4-bit-100/ not sure what can be done if anything but before I leave this I thought i wouldn't be doing the game justice unless a got in touch to spread the word about it. I appreciate your work! note Game runs with dgvdoo and win 98 compatibility mode in win 11 frame limit 60 fps and may crash straight away before launching sometimes take 2 or 3 tries.

Hmm that is a puzzle. I too would jump to a codec issue (I know Indeo codecs cause a lot of issues nowadays) but if you've ruled that out, I'm not sure.

If you run it through x32dbg, it should at least tell you what is crashing (e.g. DirectDraw, some internal game function, etc.) - that's how I did a lot of early LEGO Island modding. Then you could trace that back in Ghidra to determine what the game is trying to do at that point, and maybe even why it doesn't work and what to do about it.

Good luck!

Would love to be able to get to the bottom of it. and say i could fix it myself. Yes a debugger would be the next logical step but to be quite honest I find it quite daunting trying not to be defeatist I have never touched high level programing apart from web design before and I wouldn't know where to start to fixed it if i did find the cause, i always think it would take too long to learn. at this point (a debatable topic i know.) looking at your work with lego island the best course of action may well be a full decomp and that is well out of my or anyone's scope for now I am sure! is there a group in which people can put forward games to be worked on? that's why I'm so impressed with your work and the wider community. I'll give debugging a go a guess but I found the tutorials in the past hard to follow with no experience. Have you ever thought about making tutorial videos for debugging? thanks for your time and help.

After some debugging does the attach show a hardcoded command to close the game?
