Can't post on the announcements board, so starting a topic in here.
Not sure this is the evolution you are looking fore, Discourse (don't confuse it with disqus) is a nice self-hosted text-focused discussion platform that has more modern features phpBB or other forum softwares of old. It does require more server resources though.
