Yet Another PC Game Decomp? (Aka, How I Discovered A Strange Port And Am Trying To Do The Impossible)

Post by wowjinxy »

Greetings everyone. A few month ago I felt like playing one of my favorite childhood games for the PS1. Digimon World! So wile looking online for info about the game I discovered references to a PC version... that was exclusive to Korea... Needless to say I was confused. But looking into it I think what happened is that the PS1 wasn't very popular in Korea so instead of releasing it for PS1 they ported it to PC.

So, what exactly am I doing and why? Well to be honest... I'm not sure. That's the answer to both questions. I really want to get the game running on modern PC, perhaps make it modder friendly so people can translate the game. However I don't know to what extent I should even be working towards. Like sure, a full decomp would be great but where do I even start? Then again I could always just rework the parts that don't run on modern pc correctly. Oh, did I mention the game relies on MFC42.DLL? Yea, it's a mess.

So, I would love to hear thoughts about this and if anyone is interested please let me know and I'll gladly get with you to do something!

Edit: First thing I'm doing now is going through the starting commits of the Lego Island decomp and trying to give my project a abut of structure.

If the Lego de-compilation videos taught me anything is that you should have a good expectation for the level of work you want to do and that you need to have a team that can go through the slow grind of the process. I am busy with the last college term before graduation right now and I want to do my own smaller scale de-compilation of a Vietnamese word processor that was very influental yet largely unknown nowadays so I do not have much to offer. Nonetheless I hope you for the best of luck! kcSmile

Ah yes well, I am in multiple decomp projects as well as the lead reverse engineer for OpenZT. I do know the kind of work that goes into this but that being said every one of these projects is different in it's own way.
